What to do about Puppy Teething

Puppy teething can be one of the most frustrating times for dog owners.  At times it seems as if the once cuddly and cute puppy is not the devil running through the house chewing on everything.  One thing to realize is that they do not know any better and if they are never taught, you really can’t expect anything different from them.  During the puppy teething stage, there are a few tips and tricks that you can do to help “break” your puppy from chewing on things in your home.  Puppy teething will not stop until it stops, but the chewing of their own chew toys rather than your home furnishings can be a great way to aid the puppy through this frustrating stage.

As stated, puppy teething will not stop until their teeth have broken the skin and they do not feel the need to chew as much.  This is much like a baby puppy-teethingteething, in the fact that babies tend to get fussy when teeth are coming in and the need for teething rings are critical for keeping a baby calm.  The only difference is that at this teething stage is that dogs are already running around very well and people tend to lose sight of the puppy more than they would of a baby.

In order to help teach a puppy what is right to chew on and what is wrong to chew on is to constantly have chew toys available for the puppy to chew on.  You will need to keep a close eye on the puppy for awhile as they will still tend to leave their toys behind and find other things to chew on.  At this stage, this is common as they now think that everything is their chew toy.  If you notice them starting to chew on something other than their chew toy then you should stop them and reinstate the chew toy to them.  Give them a stern “NO” when teaching them what not to chew on.  Keep it at 1 word commands as it is much easier for them to learn these than long sentences of telling them why it is wrong because ultimately it doesn’t matter the reason as to why it is wrong, but the simple fact that it IS wrong.  After a few tries, you will definitely notice the improvement of your puppy’s behavior.
